Claims
- 1. A method of joining at least a first joining area of a first part and a second joining area of a second part, the method comprising:
placing at least the first and second joining areas in proximity to one another in a cavity; forming a plasma in the cavity by subjecting a gas to electromagnetic radiation having a frequency less than about 333 GHz in the presence of a plasma catalyst; and sustaining the plasma at least until the first and second joining areas are joined by directing the radiation into the cavity.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising flowing the gas through the cavity.
- 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising making the time-averaged distribution of radiation substantially uniform within the cavity.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the plasma is initiated at about atmospheric pressure.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the cavity is formed in a vessel comprising a substantially transmissive material.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the cavity is formed in a vessel located in a chamber comprising a material that is substantially opaque to radiation.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second parts have a portion located external to the cavity during the sustaining.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the cavity is formed in a vessel, and wherein at least one portion of an inner wall of the vessel has a contour that substantially follows a contour of a portion of at least one of the first part and the second part.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the cavity is formed in a vessel, and wherein at least one portion of an inner wall of the vessel is shaped such that the plasma can form only in a region defined between the inner wall and the first and second joining areas.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the joining areas comprises a non-metal.
- 11. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring an emission from the plasma, wherein the sustaining is performed until a spike appears in the emission intensity.
- 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising shielding at least a portion of one of the first and second parts with a material that is substantially opaque to radiation.
- 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising placing a third part in proximity to the first and second joining areas in the cavity, wherein the first and second joining areas are joined by a melting of at least a portion of the third part in the cavity.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the third part comprises a material selected from a group consisting of metal, metal powder, flux, and any combination thereof.
- 15. The method of claim 1, further comprising applying an electric bias at least to one of the first and second joining areas.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the electric bias is in the form of at least one of AC, DC, pulsed, continuous, periodic, preprogrammed and any combination thereof.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:
placing the first and second parts on an electrically conductive plate; and applying an electric bias to the plate.
- 18. The method of claim 15, wherein the electric bias is in the form of at least one of AC, DC, pulsed, continuous, periodic, preprogrammed and any combination thereof.
- 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the plasma catalyst is at least one of an active catalyst and a passive catalyst.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the active catalyst comprises at least one ionizing particle.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein the at least one ionizing particle comprises a beam of particles.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the particle is at least one of an x-ray particle, a gamma ray particle, an alpha particle, a beta particle, a neutron, and a proton.
- 23. The method of claim 20, wherein the ionizing particle consists of at least one of an electron and an ion.
- 24. The method of claim 19, wherein the passive catalyst comprises a material that is at least electrically semi-conductive.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the material comprises at least one of metal, inorganic material, carbon, carbon-based alloy, carbon-based composite, electrically conductive polymer, conductive silicone elastomer, polymer nanocomposite, organic-inorganic composite, and any combination thereof.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein the catalyst is in the form of at least one of a nano-particle, a nano-tube, a powder, a dust, a flake, a fiber, a sheet, a needle, a thread, a strand, a filament, a yarn, a twine, a shaving, a sliver, a chip, a woven fabric, a tape, and a whisker.
- 27. The method of claim 25, wherein the catalyst comprises carbon fiber.
- 28. The method of claim 24, wherein the catalyst is in the form of at least one of a nano-particle, a nano-tube, a powder, a dust, a flake, a fiber, a sheet, a needle, a thread, a strand, a filament, a yarn, a twine, a shaving, a sliver, a chip, a woven fabric, a tape, and a whisker.
- 29. The method of claim 24, wherein the material comprises at least one nano-tube.
- 30. A system for joining at least a first joining area of a first part and a second joining area of a second part, the system comprising:
at least one electromagnetic radiation source having a frequency less than about 333 GHz; and at least one vessel in which at least one cavity is formed, wherein the cavity is arranged to be irradiated by the radiation source, the cavity having a size sufficient to contain the first joining area, the second joining area, and at least one plasma catalyst for forming a plasma in the cavity by subjecting a gas to radiation from the source.
- 31. The system of claim 30, further comprising a chamber comprising a material that is substantially opaque to radiation, wherein the vessel is located inside the chamber.
- 32. The system of claim 30, further comprising a gas source connected to the at least one cavity.
- 33. The system of claim 30, wherein the cavity is not sealed.
- 34. The method of claim 30, wherein the plasma is initiated at about atmospheric pressure.
- 35. The system of claim 30, further comprising at least one temperature sensor that monitors a temperature in the at least one cavity.
- 36. The system of claim 30, further comprising at least one controller for adjusting the power level of radiation from the at least one radiation source in response to the temperature in the at least one cavity.
- 37. The system of claim 30, further comprising at least one mode mixer in the radiation such that the radiation in the cavity is distributed more uniformly over time.
- 38. The system of claim 30, further comprising at least one shield for covering at least one of the first and second parts, wherein the shield comprises a material that is substantially opaque to radiation.
- 39. The system of claim 30, wherein at least one of the first and second parts has a portion located external to the cavity.
- 40. The system of claim 30, wherein the at least one of the first and second joining areas comprises a non-metal.
- 41. The system of claim 30, wherein at least one portion of an inner wall of the vessel has a contour that substantially follows a contour of a portion of at least one of the first part and the second part.
- 42. The system of claim 30, wherein at least one portion of an inner wall of the vessel is shaped to permit the plasma to form only between the wall and the proximity of the first and second joining areas.
- 43. The system of claim 30, further comprising a third part in proximity to the first and second joining areas, wherein the joining between the first and second joining areas results from at least partial melting and freezing the third part.
- 44. The system of claim 43, wherein the third part comprises a material selected from a group consisting of metal, metal powder, flux, and any combination thereof.
- 45. The system of claim 30, wherein the plasma catalyst is at least one of an active catalyst and a passive catalyst.
- 46. The system of claim 45, wherein the active catalyst comprises at least one ionizing particle.
- 47. The system of claim 46, wherein the at least one ionizing particle comprises a beam of particles.
- 48. The system of claim 46, wherein the ionizing particle consists of at least one of an electron and an ion.
- 49. The system of claim 46, wherein the particle is at least one of an x-ray particle, a gamma ray particle, an alpha particle, a beta particle, a neutron, and a proton.
- 50. The system of claim 45, wherein the passive catalyst comprises a material that is at least electrically semi-conductive.
- 51. The system of claim 50, wherein the material comprises at least one of metal, inorganic material, carbon, carbon-based alloy, carbon-based composite, electrically conductive polymer, conductive silicone elastomer, polymer nanocomposite, organic-inorganic composite, and any combination thereof.
- 52. The system of claim 51, wherein the material is in the form of at least one of a nano-particle, a nano-tube, a powder, a dust, a flake, a fiber, a sheet, a needle, a thread, a strand, a filament, a yarn, a twine, a shaving, a sliver, a chip, a woven fabric, a tape, and a whisker.
- 53. The system of claim 50, wherein the catalyst comprises carbon fiber.
- 54. The system of claim 50, wherein the material comprises at least one nano-tube.
- 55. A system for joining at least a first joining area of a first part and a second joining area of a second part, the system comprising:
at least one electromagnetic radiation source configured to supply radiation having a frequency less than about 333 GHz; and at least one vessel in which at least one cavity is formed, wherein the cavity is arranged to be irradiated by the radiation source, the cavity having a size sufficient to contain at least one plasma catalyst for forming a plasma in the cavity by subjecting a gas to radiation from the source, wherein the cavity has a minimum cross-sectional dimension greater than about λ/4, where λ is the wavelength of the radiation.
