Claims
- 1. A vibrating wheel gyroscope comprising:
- a support oriented in a first plane;
- a wheel assembly disposed over said support and parallel to said first plane, said wheel assembly being adapted for vibrating rotationally in said first plane about a drive axis and being responsive to a rotational rate about an input axis coplanar to said first plane for providing an output torque about an output axis coplanar to said first plane, said wheel assembly comprising an inner hub, an outer wheel, and a plurality of spoke flexures extending between said inner hub and said outer wheel, wherein said plurality of spoke flexures flex in response to rotational vibration of said wheel assembly in said first plane about said drive axis, and are relatively stiff about said input axis and about said output axis; and
- a post assembly between said support and said wheel assembly for flexibly supporting said wheel assembly from said support, said post assembly comprising a post extending substantially vertically from said support and at least one post flexure coupled between said post and said inner hub so as to suspend said inner hub over said support, wherein said at least one post flexure flexes about said output axis in response to said rotational rate, and is relatively stiff about said input axis.
- 2. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 1 wherein said support, said wheel assembly, and said post assembly are comprised of a semiconductor material.
- 3. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 1 wherein said at least one post flexure is disposed concentrically within said outer wheel.
- 4. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 1 wherein said at least one post flexure is disposed along said output axis.
- 5. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 4 wherein said at least one post flexure has a shape selected from the group of "U", "T", "V", or "I" shape.
- 6. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 1 wherein said spoke flexures are curved.
- 7. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 1 wherein said outer wheel is hollow in portions distal from said input axis and solid in portions proximal to said input axis.
- 8. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 1 further including wheel protrusions extending from said outer wheel, drive electrodes disposed adjacent to said wheel protrusions, and drive electronics connected to said drive electrodes, said drive electronics receiving a drive signal to electrostatically vibrate said outer wheel rotationally at a predetermined frequency.
- 9. The vibrating wheel gyroscope structure recited in claim 8 wherein said drive electrodes are spaced from said wheel protrusions and further comprising a pick off capacitor for sensing the rotation of said outer wheel.
- 10. The vibrating gyroscope structure recited in claim 8 wherein said predetermined frequency is at least near the resonant frequency of the output axis of said wheel assembly.
- 11. The vibrating gyroscope structure recited in claim 10 wherein the drive axis has a resonant frequency associated therewith, said drive axis resonant frequency being within 5% of the resonant frequency associated with the output axis.
- 12. A method of detecting rotation in inertial space comprising the steps of:
- providing a planar wheel assembly having an inner hub, a plurality of spoke flexures having first ends coupled to said inner hub, and an outer wheel coupled to second ends of said plurality of spoke flexures;
- supporting said planar wheel assembly over a substrate with a gimbal comprising at least one spoke flexure coupled between the inner hub and said outer wheel and at least one post flexure coupled between a post extending from said substrate and said inner hub so as to effectively isolate said at least one post flexure from rotation of said outer wheel;
- vibrating said outer wheel rotationally at a predetermined frequency about a drive axis, said outer wheel being rotationally vibrated in response to electrostatic actuation by drive electrodes having a voltage applied thereto and being disposed adjacent to said outer wheel; and
- sensing an output motion about an output axis coplanar to the plane of said wheel assembly, said motion being responsive to an input rotational force about an input axis coplanar to said wheel assembly and providing an output signal having a magnitude proportional to the rate of the input rotational force, wherein said spoke flexures flex about said drive axis in response to said vibrational rotation and are relatively stiff about said input axis and said output axis, and wherein said post flexure is flexible about said output axis and relatively stiff about said input axis.
- 13. The method recited in claim 12 wherein said step of supporting said planar wheel assembly on a gimbal comprises the step of supporting said planar wheel assembly with a post flexure disposed along said output axis.
- 14. The method recited in claim 13 further comprising the step of providing said post flexure concentrically within said outer wheel.
- 15. The method recited in claim 13, wherein the step of supporting the planar wheel assembly on a gimbal further comprises the step of allowing said outer wheel to rotate relative to said inner hub.
- 16. The method recited in claim 12 wherein said step of providing said planar wheel assembly comprises the step of fabricating said planar wheel assembly from a single silicon crystal substrate.
- 17. A vibrating wheel gyroscope comprising:
- a support oriented in a first plane;
- a wheel assembly disposed over said support and parallel to said first plane, said wheel assembly comprising an inner hub and an outer wheel coupled to said inner hub by at least one spoke, said outer wheel being adapted for vibrating rotationally in said first plane about a drive axis and being responsive to a rotational rate about an input axis coplanar to said first plane for providing an output torque about an output axis coplanar to said first plane, wherein said at least one spoke is relatively stiff about said input axis and said output axis; and
- a post assembly between said support and said wheel assembly for flexibly suspending said wheel assembly over said support, said post assembly comprising at least one post extending substantially vertically from said support and at least one post flexure extending laterally from said at least one post to said inner hub of said wheel assembly, wherein said at least one post flexure flexes in response to said rotational rate about said output axis and is relatively stiff about said input axis.
- 18. The vibrating wheel gyroscope recited in claim 17 wherein said wheel assembly comprises an inner hub, an outer wheel, and a plurality of spoke flexures extending between said inner hub and said outer wheel.
- 19. The vibrating wheel gyroscope recited in claim 18 wherein said support, said wheel assembly, and said post assembly are comprised of a semiconductor material.
- 20. A vibrating wheel gyroscope for detecting a rotational rate, said gyroscope comprising:
- a support oriented in a first plane;
- a wheel assembly disposed over said support and parallel to said first plane, said wheel assembly being adapted for vibrating rotationally in said first plane about a drive axis and being responsive to said rotational rate about an input axis coplanar to said first plane for providing an output torque about an output axis coplanar to said first plane, said wheel assembly comprising an inner hub, an outer wheel, and a plurality of spoke flexures extending between said inner hub and said outer wheel, wherein said spoke flexures flex about said drive axis in response to said rotational vibration and are relatively stiff about said input axis and about said output axis;
- a post assembly disposed between said support and said inner hub of the wheel assembly for flexibly suspending said wheel assembly over said support, said post assembly including at least one post flexure flexible about said output axis, and relatively stiff about said input axis;
- at least one drive electrode disposed adjacent to said outer wheel for electrostatically actuating said outer wheel to rotate said outer wheel; and
- drive electronics coupled to said at least one drive electrode for applying a voltage to said at least one drive electrode to electrostatically actuate said outer wheel.
- 21. The vibrating wheel gyroscope recited in claim 20 wherein said outer wheel has a plurality of wheel protrusions extending laterally therefrom toward said at least one drive electrode.
- 22. The vibrating wheel gyroscope recited in claim 20 wherein said post assembly comprises at least one post flexure coupled to said wheel assembly and a post extending between said at least one post flexure and said support.
- 23. The vibrating wheel gyroscope recited in claim 20 wherein said support, said wheel assembly, and said post assembly are comprised of a semiconductor material.
