Claims
- 1. In the inspection of a patterned article used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices, a method of reducing speckle, said method comprising:effecting relative movement between an illuminating beam and said patterned article, said illuminating beam being obtained by modifying a coherent light beam so as to break, at least partially, its coherence; said modifying of said coherent light beam comprising: disposing first and second optical apparatus sequentially along a light path between a source of said illuminating beam and the patterned article, said first optical apparatus receiving said coherent light beam and said second optical apparatus transmitting an output beam that has an optical path length difference greater than a coherence length of said coherent light beam.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first optical apparatus is an optical grating, and said second optical apparatus is an acousto-optic modulator.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first optical apparatus is a fiber bundle having a plurality of optical fibers, and said second optical apparatus is an acousto-optic modulator.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first optical apparatus is an acousto-optic modulator, and said second optical apparatus is an optical grating.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first optical apparatus is an acousto-optic modulator, and said second optical apparatus is a fiber bundle having a plurality of optical fibers.
