Claims
- 1. Routing apparatus having at least two inputs and a number of outputs, the routing apparatus operating to receive data at each of the two inputs and to transmit the received data from a one of the number of outputs based, at least in part, upon a destination address contained in the data, the routing apparatus including:
- a routing table addressable by at least a portion of the destination address to produce an identification of the one of the number of outputs from which the data is to be transmitted;
- each of the two inputs having associated therewith a storage element containing port enable information identifying for each such input at least a selected one of the number of outputs from which data received at the associated one of the two inputs cannot be transmitted.
- 2. The routing apparatus of claim 1, including a memory element containing output information, the memory element being addressed by at least a portion of the destination address contained in the data received at the input to provide output information identifying a one of the outputs from which the data is to be transmitted.
- 3. The routing apparatus of claim 2, wherein the data received at the input is precluded from being transmitted from the one of the outputs identified by the output information provided by the memory element if the information in the storage element identifies the one of the outputs as being also one of the selected one of the number of outputs.
- 4. The routing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the storage element is a register.
- 5. Routing apparatus for communicating digital information between a plurality of processing system elements, including a first processing element and a second processing element, the digital information being in the form of message packets transmitted by the first processing element to the second processing element, the message packets including destination data identifying the second processing element as the destination, the routing apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of ports each having an input for receiving message packets and an output for transmitting message packets, first and second ones of the plurality of ports being coupled to the first and second processing elements, respectively;
- routing means coupled to the input and the output of each of the plurality of ports and responsive to the destination data of a message packet received at an input to communicate the message packet to the output of a one of the plurality of ports for transmitting the message packet, the routing means including routing information responsive to the destination data to identify the one of the plurality of ports; and
- each of the plurality of ports having storage associated therewith containing port enable information to identify for such port which one or ones of the plurality of ports have an output from which a received message packet may be transmitted.
- 6. The routing apparatus of claim 5, wherein the routing means includes an addressable storage element for storing a number of multi-bit entries each identifying a corresponding output of a one of the plurality of ports, the addressable storage element being responsive to at least a portion of the destination data of the message packet for selecting a one of the number of multi-bit entries to identify the output of the one of the plurality of port means to which the message packet is communicated.
- 7. The routing apparatus of claim 6, wherein the portion of the destination data defines a region of a computing system that contains at least one of the plurality of processing system elements.
- 8. The routing apparatus of claim 5, the port enable information comprising, associated with each input, a register containing enable information identifying for such input predetermined outputs of the plurality ports to which message packets received at such input cannot be communicated.
- 9. The routing apparatus of claim 8, wherein the register for each input includes a bit position corresponding to each output of each of the plurality of port means.
- 10. The routing apparatus of claim 9, wherein the bit position is set to a first digital state to inhibit communication of the message packet to the output corresponding to the bit position.
- 11. The routing apparatus of claim 6, including register means containing a default multi-bit entry identifying the output of a one of the plurality of port means as a default output to which the message packet may be communicated, the routing means including means coupled to the register means and to the addressable storage means for selecting the default multi-bit entry instead of the one of the plurality of multi-bit entries when predetermined conditions are not met.
- 12. The routing apparatus of claim 7, wherein another portion of the destination data identifies the one processing system element within the region.
