Claims
- 1. A three-dimensional transducer which may be scaled for use in macro and micro applications, yet having a relatively large surface area for the disposition of components on the transducer for a given volume of space, said transducer comprising
- a first elongate substrate,
- physical parameter sensing means disposed on a surface of the first substrate at one end thereof, for producing a characterizing signal representing a physical parameter to which the sensing means is exposed,
- transmitting means disposed on the surface of the first substrate for transmitting information signals in response to received characterizing signals,
- conductor means disposed on the first substrate for carrying the characterizing signals to said transmitting means,
- a second elongate substrate,
- receiving means disposed on a surface of the second substrate, for receiving information signals transmitted by said transmitting means, and for producing electrical signals representing the information signals, and
- utilization means coupled to the receiving means for utilizing said electrical signals.
- 2. A transducer as in claim 1 wherein said utilization means comprises emitter means for emitting signals representing said electrical signals.
- 3. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said sensing means comprises means for sensing a selected chemical species in a fluid to which the sensing means is exposed.
- 4. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said sensing means comprises means for sensing the intensity of light to which the sensing means is exposed.
- 5. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said sensing means comprises means for sensing the temperature of a fluid to which the sensing means is exposed.
- 6. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said transmitting means comprises means for transmitting electromagnetic information signals, and wherein said receiving means comprises means for receiving electromagnetic information signals.
- 7. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said transmitting means comprises means for transmitting light information signals, and wherein said receiving means comprises means for receiving light information signals.
- 8. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said emitter means comprises means for emitting light signals.
- 9. A transducer as in claim 2 wherein said emitter means comprises means for emitting electromagnetic signals.
