Claims
- 1. An apparatus for mounting particles on a substrate having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas thereon, comprising:a) a first and a second electrode plate oriented in a horizontal plane, the first electrode plate spaced from the second electrode plate, positioned below the second electrode plate, and having a conductive surface facing the second electrode plate, the first electrode plate to hold a plurality of particles; b) a substrate support for holding the substrate in a horizontal plane between the first and second electrode plates and spaced from the first electrode plate with the tacky areas facing the first electrode; c) a source of DC potential connected to at least one of the first and second electrodes to establish a polarity on the first electrode plate to charge particles thereon and cause them to be propelled from the first electrode toward the second electrode, against the force of gravity, and be propelled against the mounting surface so the particles become adhered to the tacky areas to thereby populate the tacky areas with particles; and d) a switch connected to the source of DC potential to change the polarity established on the first electrode plate to propel particles from the non-tacky areas of the substrate into contact with the surface of the first electrode, discharge them, recharge them and cause them to be propelled from the first electrode toward the second electrode, against the force of gravity, and be propelled against the substrate so the particles become adhered to the tacky areas to thereby further populate the tacky areas with particles.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:e) a particle dispenser for delivering particles over the conductive surface of the first electrode plate opposite the array of tacky and non-tacky areas on the substrate.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:f) a plate moving device for spacing the first and second electrode plates away from each other to facilitate delivering particles over the first electrode plate, and for spacing the plates toward each other to facilitate particle propulsion.
- 4. An apparatus for mounting particles on a substrate having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas thereon, comprising:a) a first and a second electrode plate oriented in a horizontal plane, the second electrode plate spaced from the first electrode plate, positioned above the first electrode plate, and having a conductive surface facing the first electrode plate; b) a substrate support for holding the substrate in a horizontal plane between the first and second electrode plates and spaced from the second electrode plate with the tacky areas facing the second electrode, the substrate supported to hold a plurality of particles; c) a source of DC potential connected to at least one of the first and second electrodes to establish a polarity on the first electrode plate to charge particles on the substrate and cause them to be propelled away from the first electrode toward the second electrode, against the force of gravity, and be propelled into contact with the conductive surface of the second electrode, be discharged, be recharged, and be propelled from the second electrode toward the first electrode, and be propelled against the substrate so the particles become adhered to the tacky areas to thereby further populate the tacky areas with particles; and d) a switch connected to the source of DC potential to change the polarity established on the first electrode plate to repeatedly propel the particles as in step c) to thereby further populate the tacky areas with particles.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising:e) a particle dispenser for delivering particles over the substrate on the array of tacky and non-tacky areas on the substrate.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising:f) a plate moving device for spacing the first and second electrode plates away from each other to facilitate delivering particles over the first electrode plate, and for spacing the plates toward each other to facilitate particle propulsion.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the substrate is in the form of an elongated web containing repeating patterns of tacky and non-tacky areas and the substrate support comprises first and second transport rollers, the first transport roller on one side of the first electrode plate and the second transport roller on the opposite side of the first electrode plate.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:g) a drive for said elongated web to intermittently transport the substrate over the first and second rollers so the repeating patterns of tacky and non-tacky areas are placed between the first and second electrode plates.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:h) a heater attached to the second electrode to heat the tacky areas to a temperature in the range of 30-80° C. during and after populating the tacky areas with particles.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising:i) a heater attached to the first electrode to heat the tacky areas to a temperature in the range of 30-80° C. during and after populating the tacky areas with particles.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:j) a heater attached to the first electrode to heat the tacky areas to a temperature in the range of 30-80° C. during and after populating the tacky areas with particles.
- 12. The apparatus of claims 1, 4, or 7 further comprising:means to heat the tacky areas to a temperature in the range of 30-80° C.
